Joanna Toole Foundation Funding Opportunity 2024: Addressing Emerging and Under-represented Animal Welfare Issues

Welcome to our latest funding opportunity! We are excited to announce that our new grant round is now open, focusing on projects that tackle emerging and under-represented animal welfare issues, particularly those exacerbated by the effects of climate change.

At the Joanna Toole Foundation we recognize the critical intersection of animal welfare and climate change and are committed to supporting initiatives that address these interconnected challenges, particularly those that are often under-represented.

We invite applications from organisations that are passionate about making a difference in the lives of animals in these situations and can demonstrate projects that are dedicated to finding innovative, tangible and sustained solutions.

Examples of eligible projects may include:

  • Investigating the impacts of climate change on vulnerable animal populations or individuals, such as seals or other marine species, particularly in the face of increasing storms and/or rising sea levels.
  • Projects or campaigns aimed at understanding and challenging the development and implementation of rapidly emerging technologies aimed at reducing farmed animals’ greenhouse gas emissions, where these technologies could have negative animal welfare effects.
  • Emerging and underrepresented welfare concerns related to commercial exploitation of animals including octopus and snake farming
  • Terrestrial invertebrate farming welfare implications.
  • Increased exploitation and disturbance of wildlife by the combined pressures of  tourism and climate change.
  • Studying and responding to changing climate patterns and migratory behaviours affecting wildlife habitats and ecosystems.

We strongly encourage applications from smaller charities and grassroots organisations that demonstrate a deep understanding of the issues at hand and propose impactful solutions. Priority will be given to projects that show a commitment to long-term sustainability of high animal welfare practices.  The Joanna Toole Foundation will fund projects in this grant round ranging from £1000 up to £15,000.

JTF and The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals with various targets and indicators, established to address social, economic, and environmental challenges and create a future without poverty and hunger, and safe from the worst effects of climate change and loss of biodiversity. Although animal welfare is not explicitly mentioned in the SDGs, they can play a critical role in promoting a holistic approach to global well-being, including the welfare of animals.  Many challenges affecting animal welfare, such as habitat loss, climate change, and biodiversity loss, are linked to broader global goals, such as poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, and social justice. The SDGs can also provide a common language and framework for collaboration with governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders to address shared challenges. By addressing environmental sustainability, climate change, biodiversity, and other interconnected issues, the SDGs can contribute to creating a world that supports the health and welfare of both humans and animals.

The Joanna Toole Foundation is keen to operate in accordance with the principles of the SDGs.  We therefore encourage applicants for grant funding to be aware of the SDGs and, where feasible or appropriate, indicate how they are addressing the interconnected issues such as environmental conservation, climate action, responsible consumption and animal welfare in their work.
